Life insurance

Life insurance, so the mortgage never becomes their problem.

A lump sum for the people who depend on you, if you die during the term of the policy. It is the most cover you can buy per pound, and it is cheapest the younger you are.

Life insurance

Level or decreasing, and why it matters

There are two common shapes. Decreasing term assurance reduces roughly in line with a repayment mortgage, so it is designed to clear the debt and nothing more. It is the cheaper option and for many people it is genuinely the right one.

Level term assurance keeps the same sum assured throughout. It costs more, but it pays the same amount whether you die in year two or year twenty-four, so there is something left over once the mortgage is cleared. If you have children, that difference is usually the whole point.

The third decision is the term itself. Matching it to the mortgage is the obvious move, but if you have young children it is worth asking whether cover should instead run until the youngest is financially independent, which is often considerably longer than the mortgage has left.

The detail

What matters here

  • Priced on your age and health when you take it out, not when you claim
  • Decreasing cover tracks a repayment mortgage and costs less
  • Level cover pays the same sum throughout and leaves something beyond the mortgage
  • Joint policies cost less than two single policies but pay out only once
  • Two single policies pay out twice and stay intact if you separate
  • Writing the policy in trust can avoid probate delays and inheritance tax
  • Cover ends at the end of the term and pays nothing if you outlive it
How it works

Four steps, no surprises

Most people come to us unsure what they are even allowed to ask for. This is how we take it from there.

We listen

A free call, at a time that suits you. We ask what you are trying to achieve and what is worrying you. No jargon, no pressure, no obligation to go further.

We research

We look across the lenders and providers available to us and work out what is genuinely open to you, then explain the options in plain English, including the ones we would rule out and why.

We recommend

You get a written recommendation setting out what we suggest, what it costs, and the risks. You decide whether to proceed. Nothing happens until you say so.

We see it through

We handle the application, chase the lender and solicitor, and keep you updated until completion. You always know who to ring.

What clients say

Judge us on what people actually said

Incredible professional support right through the process. I wish our solicitor met this exemplary standard. Peter was always available even at weekends, responding almost immediately to our requests. My wife and I have no hesitation in calling on his services again.

Excellent from start to finish. I thought I was pretty good at looking after my finances, but the great help I had from the people I dealt with showed me otherwise. Their expertise in all matters financial was second to none.

Questions

Questions we hear a lot

If yours is not here, ring us. We would rather answer it properly than leave you guessing.

Joint policy or two single policies?

A joint policy is cheaper, but it pays out once and then ends, leaving the survivor with no cover at an age when replacing it is dearer. Two single policies cost a little more, pay out twice, and stay intact if you separate. For couples with children we usually lean towards two single policies and explain the cost difference clearly.

Is life insurance worth it if I am young and healthy?

That is precisely when it is cheapest, and the price is fixed on your age and health at the point you take it out. The people who struggle to get affordable cover are almost always the ones who waited until something changed.

Do I need a medical?

Usually not. Most applications are decided on the health questions alone. Larger sums assured, older applicants or particular disclosures can trigger a nurse screening or a report from your GP, and we will tell you in advance if that is likely.

What if I already have death in service through work?

It counts, and we will take it into account. Bear in mind it usually ends when the job does, it is typically a multiple of salary rather than a figure matched to your mortgage, and it is not yours to keep if you change employer.

Term life insurance pays out only if you die during the term of the policy. If you outlive the term, the policy ends and pays nothing. It has no cash-in value at any time.

Writing a policy in trust can help a payment reach the right people without waiting for probate, and may help with inheritance tax. Trusts and taxation are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change in future.

Tell us what you are trying to do
