Why bother

The unglamorous case for protection

Nobody enjoys this conversation. It involves imagining things you would rather not imagine, and the benefit is completely invisible right up until the moment it is the only thing keeping a family in its home.

Here is the framing we use instead. You have arranged to borrow a very large sum over twenty-five or thirty years, on the assumption that your household keeps earning throughout. Protection is simply the plan for the version of those thirty years where that assumption breaks.

It does not have to be expensive and it does not have to be all six products on this page. Most households need two of them. But it should be a decision you made deliberately, rather than one you drifted into because nobody sat down and explained it.

Where to start

If you only do one thing, do them in this order

This is the order we would put our own families in, and it is not the order that pays the most commission.

1. Replace your income

You are far more likely to be off work for a long period than to die during the mortgage term. Income protection is the least bought and most likely to be claimed on.

2. Clear the mortgage

Life cover at least equal to the mortgage, over at least the mortgage term, so nobody has to sell the house in the worst year of their life.

3. Cushion a serious illness

Critical illness cover costs more than life cover for the same sum, so it is often the one that gets trimmed. Trim it, do not skip it.

How we work

Advice, not a price comparison

A comparison site sorts policies by premium. That is a useful thing to know and a terrible way to choose, because the cheapest critical illness policy on a list is frequently the one with the narrowest definitions and the longest list of exclusions.

What we do instead is read the policy wording, check how each insurer treats your particular medical history, and make sure your disclosure is complete before the application goes anywhere. Most declined claims are not insurers behaving badly. They are non-disclosure at the application stage, which is entirely preventable.

  • We read the definitions, not just the premium
  • We match your medical history to the insurers most likely to accept it
  • We check your disclosure before submission, not after a claim
  • We set the policy up in trust where that is the right answer
  • We tell you when the cover you already have is enough

How it works

How a protection case runs

From the first call to cover being in force, usually two to four weeks.

We listen

A free call, at a time that suits you. We ask what you are trying to achieve and what is worrying you. No jargon, no pressure, no obligation to go further.

We research

We look across the lenders and providers available to us and work out what is genuinely open to you, then explain the options in plain English, including the ones we would rule out and why.

We recommend

You get a written recommendation setting out what we suggest, what it costs, and the risks. You decide whether to proceed. Nothing happens until you say so.

We see it through

We handle the application, chase the lender and solicitor, and keep you updated until completion. You always know who to ring.

What clients say

Judge us on what people actually said

We do not advertise on television. Our reputation is the only thing speaking for us.

Incredible professional support right through the process. I wish our solicitor met this exemplary standard. Peter was always available even at weekends, responding almost immediately to our requests. My wife and I have no hesitation in calling on his services again.

Great service from start to finish. Very polite at all times. Kept up to date with the process. Nothing to complain about.

Excellent from start to finish. I thought I was pretty good at looking after my finances, but the great help I had from the people I dealt with showed me otherwise. Their expertise in all matters financial was second to none.

Questions

Protection questions we hear a lot

If yours is not here, ring us. We would rather answer it properly than leave you guessing.

How much cover do I actually need?

A reasonable starting point is enough to clear the mortgage, plus something for the years of income your household would lose. But the right answer depends on what other cover you already have, what your partner earns, whether there are children and how old they are, and what you would want to happen. That conversation takes about twenty minutes and it is free.

Is it not cheaper to buy online myself?

Sometimes the premium is similar, because we are paid by commission from the insurer rather than by adding to your price. What you get by taking advice is someone checking the definitions, the exclusions and your medical disclosure before you buy, rather than discovering a problem at the point of claim when it is too late to fix.

Will my medical history stop me getting cover?

Usually not, though it may affect the price or add an exclusion. Insurers differ enormously in how they treat particular conditions, mental health history, weight and family history. Matching you to the right insurer at the outset is a large part of the job.

What if I already have cover through work?

Then tell us, because it changes the advice. Death in service benefit and employer sick pay are genuinely valuable, but they usually end when the job does, and employer sick pay often runs out far sooner than people assume. We will work around what you already have rather than duplicating it.

Should the policy be written in trust?

Very often, yes, and it costs nothing to do at the outset. A policy in trust can pay out without waiting for probate and can sit outside your estate for inheritance tax. Trusts and taxation are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and the right structure depends on your circumstances.

How do you get paid for protection advice?

Protection advice is normally paid for by commission from the insurer, which does not increase the premium you pay. Where a fee would apply in your case we will tell you and agree it with you in writing before you commit to anything. We will confirm this in writing before you commit to anything.

Important information about protection

These are protection policies. Unless stated otherwise they have no investment element and no cash-in value at any time. If you stop paying premiums, cover will end and you may get nothing back.

Writing a policy in trust can help a payment reach the right people without waiting for probate, and may help with inheritance tax. Trusts and taxation are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change in future.
